Limestone Grinding & Handling
Charah provides a broad base of services to the coal fired electric utility industry to assist them in meeting the increasing environmental requirements under which they operate. As part of the Charah package of services, we provide limestone grinding facilities which can supply the ground limestone reagents required to meet the scrubber needs to capture and limit the SO2 emissions.
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) is an acidic gas that is a by-product from the coal combustion process. Responsible for the formation of acid rain, effectively removing SO2 from the flue gas is a top priority for power plants. One method of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) is using ground limestone as an alkaline sorbent. Using ground limestone can effectively remove up to 95% of SO2. Limestone is mostly comprised of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which will react with the SO2 and produce a by-product containing calcium sulfite (CaSO3) which can be further oxidized to produce wallboard gypsum.
Charah provides financing, design, permitting and capital installation to partner with utility clients to meet their ground limestone needs.
